Booknook 3D Printing Guide: From STL File to Shelf

Booknooks are one of BookTok's most beloved aesthetics — miniature worlds tucked between your books, glowing with atmosphere and detail. If you've ever wanted to print your own, this guide walks you through everything: from choosing the right STL file to finishing your booknook for the shelf (and the camera).

What You'll Need

• A FDM or resin 3D printer (FDM works well for most booknook structures; resin gives finer detail on smaller elements)
• Filament or resin in your chosen colour — black, grey, and translucent work especially well for dark fantasy aesthetics
• Sanding paper (400–1000 grit) for surface finishing
• Primer and acrylic paints for detailing
• LED strip lights or fairy lights for the atmospheric glow effect
• Your STL file — more on that below

Printing Tips

Layer height: 0.1–0.15mm gives the best surface quality for display pieces. If you're printing structural elements only, 0.2mm is fine and faster.

Supports: Most booknook designs have overhangs — use tree supports in your slicer to minimise scarring on visible surfaces.

Orientation: Print the facade face-down where possible to keep the most visible surface support-free.

Infill: 15–20% is sufficient for display pieces. Increase to 30%+ if you're adding heavy lighting hardware inside.

Finishing Your Booknook

This is where the magic happens. Sand the exterior surfaces progressively from 400 to 1000 grit, then apply a light coat of grey primer. Once dry, dry-brush with a lighter shade to pick out edges and architectural details — this creates the illusion of depth and age.

For the interior, matte black paint absorbs light beautifully and makes your LED glow pop. Warm white or amber LEDs give the most atmospheric, candlelit effect.

Photographing Your Booknook for BookTok

Shoot in a darkened room with only your booknook's internal lighting active. A macro lens or your phone's portrait mode will blur the background books beautifully. Slow reveals — pulling the camera back from a close-up of the interior — perform extremely well on TikTok.
