Unveiling the Shadows: The Design Journey of Our 'Lights Out' Covers
Here at Incognito FX Studios, creating a bespoke, sculpted book cover is never just about slapping a design onto a template. It is an evolutionary process. We take official editions of beloved books and transform them into tactile, three-dimensional pieces of art. Our latest project for Lights Out was one of the most intense design journeys we have undertaken so far.
Getting the atmosphere right for this specific cover meant going through several iterations before we finally struck the perfect balance. Here is a look behind the curtain at how the final design came to life.
The Initial Concepts: Finding the Right Tone
When we first started mocking up the bas-relief plates for Lights Out the vision was on the mask from the beginning.
Early prototypes featured a more traditional design with the title and author, we then transitioned to a quote with a key object before eliminating all these designs and moving to a far more unique design. While these early drafts were striking, they didn't quite capture the specific tension and atmosphere required for this title. They felt a little too simple, so it was back to the drawing board.
The Breakthrough
The turning point came when we decided to focus heavily on developing the entire cover into a being part of the design instead of focusing on the centrepiece alone. This came in the form of leaning heavily into the hacker theme by turning the cover into a literal circuit board that can actually accommodate lighting behind the centrepiece from a hidden battery pack in the cover.
We realized that to do this story justice, the cover needed depth literally and figuratively. By adjusting the digital sculpt to include all these new design choices, everything finally clicked into place.
